I <3 Juno!

February 1st, 2008 · No Comments

So I stayed up until the early morning to finish the movie but it was worth it. Click here to see the whole discussion that Beatlebum and I had over on his video post for Juno.

The first thing that drew me to Juno after all the raves it got from the traditional press and bloggers alike is Michael Cera. Yep, just give me my Arrested Development (or Veronica Mars) alums, I’m there.

When I finally saw a clip and learned that Jason Bateman (aka Michael Bluth) would also be there, I told myself “this should be fun”. (Even though he and Michael Cera didn’t have scenes together.)

Add to the mix Allison Janney who despite her wonderful performance in The West Wing still reminds me of “Reginal’s quivering member” every time I see her.

For the first time, I enjoyed watching Jennifer Garner.

–side comment begins–

Yes, I did watch Alias but it was more of the JJ Abrams factor than for her. I actually stopped watching that show after the first season partly because I couldn’t stand her. Plus I took it personally that she married then divorced Scott Foley. (Noel)

–side comment finished–

I actually felt for her character Vanessa who has been longing to become a mom. From the obssessive-compulsive cleanliness and orderliness upon first meeting Juno and her Dad to the moment she held the baby in her arms, she comes across as a woman with so much longing and love in her for the baby.

Of course, there’s Ellen Page who plays the title character. Never would have thought that Kitty Pryde would be able to pull this off! :P Not once in the movie did it feel that she wasn’t Juno. If you get what I mean. I love it that her dad and stepmom has this unconditional acceptance of her “different-ness”.

Allison Janney as Juno’s stepmom Bren has the most wonderful lines. Some examples:

I think that kids get bored and have intercourse.
Maybe they’ll do a far shittier job of raising the kid than my dumbass stepdaughter ever would.
Doctors are sadists who like to play God and laugh at the lesser people’s pain.

Diablo Cody was able to pull together all this wonderful dialogue and Jason Reitman was able to show it on screen in a way that in turn made me stand up, be sentimental, laugh and cry. It’s been a while since a movie has made me feel so deeply.

The soundtrack is reported to be number 1 on the Billboard charts. I do like the music but it feels overbearing overall. That’s probably the only gripe I have about this movie.

I was already sold on the movie based on the cast alone. Seeing it in full was simply awesome. Highly recommended.
