Time’s All-Time 100 Novels

October 20th, 2005 · No Comments

Time Magazine released its All-Time 100 Novels list. The list includes books in English published from 1923 (The first year of the magazine). I looked through the list and saw that as much as I love books, I have only read 5 (Okay, 4 1/2) of the books on the list. And I read most of it not of my own volition but because they were required school readings.

This is my list:
1. Animal Farm (George Orwell)
2. The Catcher in the Rye (JD Salinger)
3. Lord of the Flies (William Golding)
4. Lord of the Rings (JRR Tolkien) – This is my 1/2 since I never really got to finish it. Enjoyed ROTK more than this first book.
5. To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) – One of my most loved stories of all time. Atticus Finch is probably my pick for best fictional character.

Many of the books listed, I have never heard of before. Though there are sevral like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath that have been on my reading list for ages. Of course, there is also Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 bestseller Gone with the Wind which I vowed to read since finding out that I shared birthdays with the author.
