Peter Norvig wrote this insightful article: Teach Yourself Programming in 10 Years
I’m guilty of getting those in xx days books. They helped me explore the intricacies of developing my skills in design and development. However in reading those books, I never claimed that I was an expert. (Well, except perhaps during job interviews!) It does take time to develop oneself and possess the skills that several days of hours or months would do. You need to immerse yourself with whatever it is. The tips given by Mr. Norvig are very helpful for anyone trying to learn programming or any kind of skill for that matter.

Pretty cool, I was reading this same article the other day. I plan to master php, html and xml and also a bit of apple script hopefully very soon. I prefer Lynda Hands On Training books to the xx Hours titles. These books are for us who can only afford to do this in our free time.
